Inside the Gamer's Studio #17: Nadeo (Creators of Trackmania)
![]() ![]() ![]() Another one-on-one with Journalism Knight. ![]() Good mid-after-morning everyone and welcome to today's show, beside me today I have Florent who will be speaking on behalf of the other members of Nadeo; more commonly known for their hit game: Trackmania. With the title soon to become available on the Nintendo DS I thought I'd grab them before fame whisks them away on a cloud high in the sky, so let's get cracking! Me Welcome to the show, Florent! Now then, we've all seen how far Nadeo as a whole has come over time, but tell me; How many of you are there that make up Nadeo and how did you all end up meeting? Florent Oh! It starts with a very open question! My name is Florent Castelnerac and I am a builder enthusiast. I like to build things. People around me at Nadeo like to make things nice or to make them intelligent. The team is pretty much like a Sport, Music or MMO team. There's the Warrior, Healer or Magician. We are complementary. The most important thing is to be like that in our spirit, before being technically complementary. I could not hire just myself, this would be a disaster. The same way other people here can not lead the company, it would be very painful. ... Posted on October 28, 2008

College Prep Course: ECON 102: Living on the Cheap
Okay so apparently people expected the ECON article to be about COLLEGE LIVING. A bit confusing to me but I understand the distress; college is fucking expensive. So I've written this ECON 102 article with some handy money saving tips.
-First off, resident advisors get free (single) rooms and board and campus dollars and like 80 additional bucks a week. Sounds good right? Hold on. First off if you want to apply to be an RA, you can only do it in your sophomore year and you have to do the orientation your freshman year so chances are you'll live in the dorms at least one year. Also breaking the rules kind of fucks you bad, so no drinking in your room unless you're careful, no smoking weed, all sorts of shit. And best of all; someone has shit on the floor of the bathroom, stapled their underwear to your door, pennied the door so you can't get out, made the world's nastiest ramen in the fucking sink and just left it there, threw up in the shower, and took a piss in the charity food box. All of this happened to the RA people I knew. The free room and board comes with a price. I've seen RAs have to get out the shower and yell at some stupid fucking kids trying to climb a tree. Also your residents will mostly hate you because you have to tell them to stop doing shit. And for those of you planning to do work study jobs or just an off campus job? Bad plan to balance the two. ... Posted on October 25, 2008

Music creation interview: Scubacoaster
HELLO AGAIN!
Music Creation Interview: Scubacoaster/Bunnymilk ![]() MUSIC INTERVIEW WITH A DUNCE ![]() Quote I am one of those WASTES OF SPACE you hear about sometimes. FYI I have been pretty useless lately and this is my first article in six weeks!!! Missed me huh? Bunnymilk aka Scubacoaster aka Local dunce aka Conjugal_visit66 is an altogether self-recognized ‘waste of space’ and a former GW admin. He retired because you guys fuck him off so much he gave up on us : ) Scuba likes to play around with music stuff and we actually talked for ages about everything from GW ISSUES to FAVORITE MEMBERS. Me: Sorry I have been so hard to contact lately!! Please do tell us about the man behind the legend! Scubacoaster: My real name is Marlon Brando which was either a sick joke by my parents or just a very unfortunate coincidence. Anyway I have grown up with no end of godfather jokes so don't make any. Me: Hahaha wow that is the best! Except he is a frightening mobster and as a gw member you are probably very white/thin? ... Posted on October 24, 2008

Gamecake.net Alpha!
Some of you may remember Bart's intial idea of creating a game uploading site. Well, the alpha version is ready to use! To quote the topic:
Quote I have just finished a super early version of a new project of mine. It's called GameCake and it's mission is to make it super easy for you to upload your game, whether it be currently in development or a fully complete game. Instead of using rapidshare and a bunch of other weird providers you can use GameCake to upload your game, any downloads it may have, screenshots, and keep people up to date. All of our games are hosted on SUPER RELIABLE SERVERS so it's very hard for us to lose data! Neat! Get on the groundfloor of this new service. Click here for the topic and here to check out Gamecake.net! Gamecake uber alles. PS I'd have this in the games section but for some odd reason that section isn't the main front page??? College Prep Course: ECON 101
Welcome to your ECON 101 class! Before I begin, there's something I should say. As a resource tool, I've been relying on my memories of a fantastic book, An Incomplete Education. Not saying I plagarized the thing (I've lent it to a friend and he's still got it because it's a great enough book that no one likes to give it up), but I did realize certain aspects of my English article were written similarly. Not word for word or even on the same subjects but they had a breakdown in their book of “high school/college” reading and I just realized that I pretty much cribbed that style! So if I did accidentally plagarize, I'm very sorry. Regardless I feel kind of bad because I know I've been taking stuff from this book, even if it's mostly from my memory (although I did IM my friend and ask him to refresh the British names part because fuck if I can even remember that shit off the top of my head) so I'd like to take this opportunity to shill this most excellent book as a way of apology. Chef also likes it! ...

Game Design 101 - The RPG Battle System, Monsters, and You
Before this begins, I must say please forgive me, for I do not have any witty pictures to make this article look interesting or funny, nor am I going to be talking about an interesting topic like why Facebook is terrible or why we should ban all the admins.
Instead this article is going to be talking about Game Design, specifically Role Playing Games, and specifically....Battle Systems and Monsters. Before we get into the meat of this subject, let's lay down the ground work for what we're talking about... If you take a Role Playing Game and bring it down to its basics, you get 2 parts: the Map area, and the Battle area. The map area is where the story gets told, your characters grow in personality and depth (assuming the story is well crafted), quests are earned, and basically where the story of the game advances. The battle area is where risk and reward come in, challenge is formed, your character's are challenged to their limits, quests are generally finished, and where your character's advance physically. ... A Day in the Life of a Programmer - October 7th
A Day in the Life of a Programmer ![]() October 7, 2008 Note: I will have to refrain from using any names or anything, as I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do so. I will mention one name, which is his nick-name: Oz, because he comes up a lot in this story. Me and him are good friends, we were the first two employees and so we've been friends the longest of anyone in the office (except for Oz and my boss, who is an awesome dude and a great coder). We are bro's. I'll try to skip over the coding shit I do, because that's not really interesting, nor the point of this article. Disclaimer: this story is entirely fictional, any resemblance to any real person/entity is entirely coincidental. Before I leave my house for work, I open up my Outlook to see if there's anything going on at work already. I have an email stating that one of our sites is throwing an error on the "Support Request" page. It's just a simple page that you fill out a form and will send and email and while I didn't build that page, I was certain it'd be an easy fix. Perhaps the SMTP address is wrong. Well I think "Ok got something to do this morning," and head out. ... Posted on October 11, 2008

College Not for You, Indie Developer?
Okay now I may not be a Pokemon, or someone with any SIGNIFICANT TALENT, but hey it's my job to write stuff and I'm out of practice.
Leaching off the Popularity of Others I'm doing it here... GO ME! :D Okay so we have a member of our community, he goes by the name of Steel, or more recently Pidgeotto26805465-whatever (fucking evolve, srsly). He waltzes on in here like he owns the place, fucking beats cancer, becomes staff and writes articles that set the bar above the rest, I mean fuck, you call him 'Steel', I call him 'Made of'. Anyway fuck him, this article isn't about him, it's just my way of saying "Good job man! You are a Winner on the Internets!", (thanks for making us look bad, chump). This is an article similar (but not rivaled to), his College Prep Courses. ![]() Hands up if the first thing you thought of was Silver4Donuts? Now unlike Mr. Oh look at me, writing huge walls of stuff for you to do for College, I'm going to take the short and sweet (lazy), approach. While your friends(?) are out there trying to earn an education (since 13 years through compulsory education wasn't enough), you're free to roam the internet. ... Posted on October 11, 2008

College Prep Course: ENG 101
First off: have you checked out this yet? A hundred bucks! FREE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!! Click that topic, stupid. Post in it or the thread it links also. Also, Sarevok posted some shit about Dwarf Fortress in the Games blog! Play with dwarves, love dwarves.
Okay let's get this out of the way: this article, and none of the ones that follow are actually a synopsis of everything you learn in college. These are what you should know PRE-college, or on graduating high school. Unfortunately, four years tends to blur together with all the shit I learned out of class so I might stretch out of the bounds of high school occasionally. Just keep in mind I'm not talking about shit you read in middle school or learned in high school because it's what you also go over in college. It's English 101! Unlike your college English 101 I'm not going to teach you how to write an essay about your favorite color, but instead about literature. Let's get started! Books You Absolutely Should Read I'm going to go through a pretty good list of things but honestly some of them can actually be faked if you just read the wikipedia article or cliff's notes. The following cannot. People will call you on your shit and you'll fuck up because you didn't read books that are almost universally read in high school. ... Posted on October 10, 2008
