X-Factor Weekly Project

- Past Projects

Below is list of past project submissions for people to download and view

Week -1- Multi-Texturing.
The Mission...or should I say project for week-1- was to apply 4 textures to a single surface using DirectX's multi-texturing capabilities.

Well it there wasn't many submissions for the first week!.... I think to many people expect to submit amazing code.... well simple or complex...worth giving it a shot ;-)

Ben_3D - Date: 29-04-2003 - Time: 07:42:05 - DownloadCode

Week -2- Let there be Light (Lighting)
The project for this week (3-5-2002), was simply to apply lighting to a shape....nothing spectacular of course, just to light a simple shape.  Well we have one late submission, but his code was still put into the bucket...as it seemed like such a good try...good work Spikecura.

Spikecura - Date: 12-05-2003 - Time  --:--:--   - DownloadCode (late submission)

Week -3- Loading a model from a file :) ..MOOooooo
Well this week was a really good project.  If you participated, then you'd know how super cool the model was..heheh  And what the model was before anyone else.  You may download and view some of the past submissions for the week-3- project...and take a look at the cow model rotating, and what the various ideas that people did to present it. (10-5-2003)

Week -4- Billboarding....don't turn your back on the camera!
Billboarding was a great project...it really opens your eyes to what tricks can be accomplished if you put your mind to it.  Whole games have been made with billboarding at there center ... creating a semi-real 3D world...but with 2D animated billboard characters. (24-05-2003)

Week -5- AlphaBlending - Not a 100% there.
It was a simple task at hand, but can create some great effects.  The ability to generate AlphaBlending, means that you can blend various textures/images together, create partly transparent objects.....

Week -6- Morphing - A shape shifter.
Well by far the best effort this week was by PeterGabe, and if you take a look at his demo code will agree!.  Again it has been an intersting project...and shows the principles and difficulties of shape shifting from object to object.  Of course with a bit of time and effort, who knows what is possible :)

Week -7&8- Moving Shapes?
Creating a simple object, then moving it around the screen.  But using a bit of very basic collision detection to keep it on the screen.

Even though its only a single shape, its nice to see an object bouncing around and creating a sort of mystical animation.

Week -9- Manipulating Textures.
Texture manipulation is like going back to the days of 2D, where you would set pixels...or alter pixels individually to create that cool effect you wanted.  Well you would create or load a texture, then manipulate the individual pixels - demonstrate your mastery of DirectX!  But...buttt...the xbox has a hidden extra, it swizzles textures...well textures that you load...you can still create linear textures - but to render them you need it swizzled.  Well a few people had a go, and created some stunning effects.

PeteGabe - 27-06-2003 - Time 04:33:18 - DownloadCode (it has to be seen as words can't describe it!...)

Week -10- Ground Shadows.
In my personal opinion, shadows can bring that little bit of an edge to a demo or a game - giving it an almost realistice effect.  As Ben_3D has shown in his demo code, shadows don't necessarily have to be hard...

Week -11- Bump Mapping it!
Bump mapping is a great effect to add detail to your objects without increasing the polygon count while producing a great effect. We had four entries this week which is our record! Hopefully it'll keep going upwards. PeteGabe's entry uses the Ogg Vorbis SDK which you can download here.

Couple of things to note, you must include or at least reference any external needed files. If you are using mikxbox you may as well include the files. Garpster's entry even with mikxbox does not work and gives SetError compile errors. Also, the entry should be compatible with the latest XDK release which is currently 5558. In PeteGabe's entry, there is a reference to XbUtil_CreateVertexShader with the wrong number of parameters.

Ben_3D     - 11-07-2003 - Download Code - Rotating Cubes
PeteGabe  - 11-07-2003 - Download Code - Moving Cubes and Music
Wishi        - 12-07-2003 - Download Code - Tunnel and Movement

Week -12- Acme ToonTM - That's all folks!
Toon shading is being used increasingly in games especially updates of old cartoons and even racing games such as Auto Modellista. It's certainly clever and there have been many different styles created with it. Unfortunately, there's only two entries this week, but PeteGabe's musical number will always give us hope!

PeteGabe  - 11-07-2003 - Download Code - Mask, Torus and Music
Ben_3D     - 11-07-2003 - Download Code - Rotating Plane

Week -13- Up and Down, Up and Down
The real power of an xbox, is its ability to use vertex/pixel shaders!  No more putting all the pressure on your xbox cpu to do all the work!  Now we can pass some of that work onto the GPU processor :)  Which this weeks project, we are altering the vertices...but we are doing it in the vertex shader pipeline...

Ben_3D     - 26-07-2003 - Download Code - Unstable surface plane

Week -14- Collision detection in an Essay?
It was an easy project... but something everyone who does 3D needs to know.  Planes..and points...and lines... and how to determine simple collision detection :)

Ben_3D     - 02-08-2003 - Download Code

PeteGabe  - 31-07-2003 - Download Code

Week -15- Sprite Animation.
Some simply stunning effects can be created by animating textures... As you can wrap animated textures to surfaces.. for example, giving your 3D character the feeling that his skin is moving.. or make a simple 2D game and move your textured quad ... or even animate the image on the screen back-buffer.  The submission by Ben_3D is that of animated butterflies - demonstrating the simple principles behind texture animation.

Ben_3D     - 10-08-2003 - Download Code

Week -16- Simple Particle Engine - Its like magic!
